VALERIE WALDEN PAINTING CHOSEN FOR
AUSTIN PASTEL SOCIETY JURIED MEMBER EXHIBITION

A new painting by Valerie Walden will be included in the 2010 Annual Austin Pastel Society Member
Exhibition. The striking work titled “I Hear the Whistle Blowing” features a dramatic, mountain-side
train in Skagway, AK and measures 12 inches by 36 inches. Fittingly, it is from her new Alaska Series
that also features glaciers, and ocean scenes.
The exhibition runs March 8 through May 1, 2010 at the Corridor of Art in downtown Austin. The show
encompasses landscapes, portraiture, figurative, still life, floral and animal paintings in a range of pastel
techniques. It is open to the public, free of charge during regular business hours. A special Artists’
Reception is scheduled for March 21, from 3:00-5:00 pm.
This year, the show was juried by noted still life pastelist Claudia Seymour. Ms. Seymour holds a
Master Circle Medal in the International Association of Pastel Societies, a Signature Membership in
the Pastel Society of America, and serves as President of the Salmagundi Club in New York. Her work
is widely collected throughout North America and overseas.
Ms. Walden commented, “I’m pleased be to part of the annual show again this year. And, I’m glad to have
my work recognized by such a distinguished juror and accomplished artist as Claudia Seymour.” Ms.
Walden will be attending Sunday’s reception to discuss “I hear the Whistle Blowing” which may be found
on her website and on the Austin Pastel Society’s site.

About Valerie Walden
Valerie Walden developed her talent with inspiration and guidance from artists and instructors at the
Austin Museum of Art, University of Texas, Leslie DeMille of the Scottsdale Artists’ School, and
renowned plein air artists Scott Christensen of Idaho and Bob Rohm of Texas. She works primarily in
pastels and oils. Her work draws heavily upon her interpretations and impressions of nature. She is a
member of the Austin Visual Arts Association, Austin Pastel Society, Southwest Pastel Society and
Plein Air Austin. And, she is a resident artist at the cooperative Austin Art Space, www.austinartspace.

The Austin Pastel Society is a Non-Profit Organization founded in 1998 by a group of Austin artists
