“START” EXHIBIT CELEBRATES NEW YEAR,
NEW ADVENTURES WITH NEW ART
-- Five Resident Artists Showcase Their Work Jan. 6th through Feb. 2, 2008 ---
Austin, TX, January 6, 2008 – What to do when your founder moves to Alaska? Have an art exhibition!
START showcases the artwork of the resident artists at Artspoken Gallery and Studios in
celebration of the New Year and new adventures. Rebecca Bennett, Lisa Cowling, Karen Harton, Jan
Knox, and Valerie Walden define the eclectic studio and boutique gallery space.
Rebecca Bennett, an original AG&S artist explains, “The show embraces new beginnings, a new year,
and the new adventure of our founding member, Karen Harton. Karen is on her way to a year or more in
Juneau, Alaska with her new husband. She will remain with us not only in spirit but will continue to
exhibit her work at the gallery. The co-op structure Artspoken adopted last fall allows the resident
artists to have work space, and be a defining part of how the exhibit space evolves over the next year. It’s
a new year, a new adventure, and a new START. We are excited! We’d like to make this an annual
tradition.”
The work on display ranges from brightly abstract to quietly rendered. The varied nature of the artists
and art is evidenced in the profiles of the participants.
• Rebecca Bennett – Using the sensual quality of oils, Becky creates layered abstractions which
explore the dynamics of color, line, and texture often incorporating the horizon line. The viewer is
encouraged to interpret their experience of the work, rather than the work itself.
• Lisa Cowling – Lisa’s pieces are designed to create a contemplative, meditative state bringing
peace and awareness to the viewer. Drawing on her art studies in Florence and London, she works in
oils to create works of varying colors, textures and patterns.
• Karen Harton – Karen explores the relationship between abstract and representational languages,
and investigates the complex ways those languages interact in contemporary painting. Each work is a
resemblance of a natural object, but the stylized presentation produces an image that is ultimately
indefinable.
• Jan Knox – Nature in all its brilliant colors and textures are the subject of Jan’s paintings. Her
inspiration comes from her training as a geologist and her travels. The emotions and memories of the
wonderful sights of the world and man’s interaction with remote places, all touch the heart and her
paintings.
• Valerie Walden – Val’s memorable images use the reflective colors of pastels to interpret rather
than mirror nature. Her representations, while recognizable, saturate the senses with color conveying the
emotion of the moment, from the power of thunder or the serenity of a stone to the subtle self-assurance
of a nod.
START is open to the public Noon-4:00PM, Fridays and Saturdays until Feb. 2, 2008. A preview of
some of the work and more information is available at www.artspoken.com.
